Static mast calculation

Mast calculations should normally be based on a wind speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). (Exceptions under extreme conditions.) Aluminum has modulus of elasticity of 70’000 N/mm2. This is three times less than steel. It is thus the nature of aluminum masts that they swing widely. Since gusty winds can suddenly appear, it can happen that the gust moves the mast in the same direction as the momentarily prevailing wind. This increases the loading on the mast, and can lead to a very dangerous condition. The force applied can be much higher than the force without gusts. This condition is taken into account in the technical data following.


Calculating the permissible peak force:


The peak loads specified in the tables have been calculated in accordance with DIN 4131 and 4113. The deformation is based on the theory of kinetics (Mohr’s Laws) and the gust effects using formulas in accordance with DIN 4131 A2. For the calculation to the 2nd order theory, the vertical components of the antennas are assumed to be 40% of the antenna wind loading. The free clamping length can be calculated from the following relation:


Free clamping length: 10% of the mast length,
minimum 60 cm.


Under no circumstances is the maximum free clamping length to exceed that of the length of the base tube. Since aluminum is a material exhibiting a high strength, but a relatively low E-modulus, the deformation of the supporting framework has to be checked by the user. Excursions of the mast peak could occur which could reach 1/5 of the free mast length. Antenna performance loss must be taken into account by the system user in the project phase in order to select the proper mast type. The extent of the excursion will be made available by the manufacturer upon request. We can do testable static calculations for you in a short time. Such calculations are not included in the price of the mast and will be invoiced.
